Exploring History: Virginia Students Showcase Innovative 360º Video Research at Shenandoah University

In a groundbreaking event that unfolded on Thursday night, February 29, at 6:30 p.m., students enrolled in Dr. Warren Hofstra’s Virginia History last fall at Shenandoah University, presented their immersive research in Hester Auditorium of Henkel Hall. Hofstra, a Stewart Bell Professor of History at Shenandoah University, has always been an advocate for unconventional teaching approaches. As one of the initial professors at Shenandoah to adopt virtual reality, Hofstra has been a pioneer in exploring innovative educational methods.

Departing from conventional methods, these students immersed themselves in the past using the innovative medium of 360º video. The research undertaken by these students also went beyond traditional approaches, offering a unique perspective on the themes and ideas encapsulated in the Abrams Delight Museum. Rooted in video and photographic materials, this immersive experience allowed attendees to journey through the rich history of Virginia.

To fully appreciate the immersive nature of the 360º video presentations, attendees were encouraged to wear VR headsets, which were provided by AccessVR to attendees. This approach provided a captivating and educational journey through historical landscapes that shaped the region.

The success of this unique program was made possible through a collaborative effort between the Shenandoah University Department of History, the Winchester–Frederick County Historical Society (administrators of the museum), and AccessVR – an immersive technology company specializing in 360º video production. This collaboration seamlessly blended academia with cutting-edge technology.

Leading the discussion on the remarkable potential of immersive technology for learning and education was JJ Ruscella, the Executive Vice President of AccessVR and the founding director of Shenandoah University’s Center for Immersive Learning (SCiL). His insights shed light on the transformative power of immersive technology in the field of education.

All were invited to witness this extraordinary event, where history came to life through the lens of technology. The evening redefined the way history was explored and understood, leaving a lasting impact on all who attended.
